Stars against Edmonton

So do to the fact that I have the worst schedule ever this week (split shifts), I am going to be writing during intermissions about the previous period.

1st Period
This was definitely a quick game, which I can appreciate when I have to wake up at 5am and the game doesn’t start until 8:30pm. The Stars Live broadcast was nice enough to inform people that our team is pretty bad ass, holding the record for the best penalty kill percentage during the regular season at 89.3%. It was the 99-00 team, who made it to the Stanley Cup finals that year. Jeff Halpern quickly made it 1-0 less than 4 minutes into the game with a goal from Mike Modano and Steve Ott. Turco came out of his net a little too much for me, Stu Barnes had to make a save to help keep the Stars in the lead at one point. Ralph apparently thinks that he or Zubov is a pirate, saying that Zubov swashbuckled the puck at one point. I expect to see an eye patch anyday now. Chris Conner took only his 3rd penalty of the season 17 minutes into the game, which Dustin Penner took advantage of with 45 seconds left on the power play. Tom Gilbert and Jarret Stoll got the assists on that one. Ott got a great hit on Ales Hemsky, which Steve Staios didn’t appreciate. So he went after Otter, and both recieved a 2 minute roughing minor with 13 seconds left in the period. Second will start with a four on four.

2nd Period
The four on four went by fairly quickly with no one scoring. Robidas took a penalty for delay of game about 6 minutes into the period, which the Stars killed. The game got extremely intense about 14 minutes in, when Dwayne Roloson was caught out of his net. Otter tried to get a puck in but was unable to due to Shawn Horcoff being all up in his way. Soon after, Penner got a breakaway which Turco had an answer for, making an amazing save! Ralph is also at it again, refering to Modano as a cowboy by “corralling a bouncing puck.” So we’ve got Pirate Zubie and Cowboy Mo. We’ll see who is next and what childhood dream occupation they become.

3rd Period
Period started with both goalies having to make amazing saves, both teams are out for blood for the elusive goal that could possibly win the game. Razor spilled the beans about Marty Reasoner being one of what was supposed to be anonymous players wearing thermablades. But that’s okay Razor, because you are awesome for the fact that you use the term “sassy save.” Stars got their first power play about 10 minutes into the period, when Penner took 2 minutes for head butting (hehehe.) Sadly, they weren’t able to cash in. Marty Turco took a rare penalty 15 minutes in for interference, which Mittens served. As usual, the Stars were amazing on the penalty kill. And I guess the Stars did not get my memo, because overtime was not on my schedule.

Overtime
Ralph used the term Swashbuckle again, only this time with Stu Barnes, so it looks like Zubov has a first mate. Because obviously Zubov will be Captain Russian. Steve Staios took a penalty for hooking on Mike Ribeiro with 1:30 left in overtime. Despite having some great scoring chances, the Stars weren’t able to get the puck in the net. So we are now going to shootout. I guess my memo really did get lost.

Shootout

  • Sam Gagner shoots first, which he misses.
  • Modano is up first for Dallas, which Roloson stops.
  • Ales Hemsky‘s up next, which Turco makes an amazing save on. Good job, Marty.
  • Zubov next for Dallas, which he cashes in on. His first shootout goal of the season. (Which he apparently scored with his Zubovian Shimmy, according to Razor)
  • Horcroff, with the game on his shoulders, shoots but Marty is too awesome.

Stars take the 2 points. To my surprise, there were no points by the PBC line. It’s been a while since that has happened.

The three stars of the night are Sergei Zubov with the shootout winner, Dwayne Roloson stopping 35 of 36 shots, and Marty Turco taking the number one spot with 33 saves and blanking the Oilers on the shootout.

Stars take on Vancouver Thursday at 9pm. Expect another post similar to this. I hate late games.
