Welcome back, Stars.

The Stars from earlier in the season made an appearance last night, beating the Minnesota Wild 3-1.  The PBC line took over most of the scoring, including the game winning goal.  Mike Ribeiro picked up 2 assists on the night after being signed to a 5-year/$25 million deal.

The Stars were the first to score in the 2nd period (with no goals coming in the 1st) when Matt Niskanen blasted one past goaltender Niklas Backstrom.  Jeff Halpern and Steve Ott managed to each grab a point with assists on Nisky’s goal.  Not to be overdone, Mark Parrish got one for the Wild a little under 4 minutes later from Marion Gaborik and Kim Johnsson.  It would be the only goal Minnesota would get past Marty Turco.

Marty Turco also played a great game, he seemed to have shaken off the last 2 rocky games he had against the Red Wings and this Wild team.  Antti Miettinen gave the Stars a 1-goal lead for the 2nd time of the night 11 minutes into the 2nd with a goal from Brenden Morrow and Mike Ribeiro.  It came from a slick little pass from Brenden Morrow right across the blue line.  Antti Miettinen scored again just 2 minutes into the 3rd period, also from Morrow and Ribs to make it 3-1, which would remain to be the final score.

A lot of people have been saying the Stars have been having problems with our power play, which I agree with.  We haven’t gotten many pucks into the net on the power play, but the difference between this season and last is the fact that unlike last season, we are finding ways to get pucks in the net on even strength.  And while special teams are an extemely important part of hockey, I think it’s just as important to get points at even strength because you aren’t going to be able to rely on your power play for everything.

Also, may I just mention that I was completely distracted the first 10 minutes of the game due to the fact that I had Chris Conner (and the rest of the Iowa Stars) right in my eyeline; so most of the 1st period I spent watching Chris Conner watch the game.  Ooops.

Your 3 stars of the night were

  1. Antti Miettinen – 2 goals
  2. Brenden Morrow – 2 assists
  3. Mike Ribeiro – 2 assists

Antti Miettinen also stole 2nd Star of the night for all of the NHL.  Way to go Mittens.
