Stars sweep the series with the Oilers

The Stars beating the Oilers 5-2 and sweeping this season’s series is no fluke, the  Stars have had their number most of the decade really.

Loui Eriksson started the scoring, getting a goal from Jussi Jokinen and Trevor Daley over 16 minutes into the first period.  The Oilers actually took quite a bit of penalties that first period, including a 10 minute game misconduct for Zack Stortini.

Stars earned 2 more goals in the second period, putting them up 3-0.  The Oilers got into even more penalty trouble, Jere Lehtinen scored a power play goal (assisted by Brenden Morrow and Jussi Jokinen) when Mathieu Roy took a penalty for interference.  Stars took some penalties too.  Antti Miettinen got called for slashing over 16 minutes into the second.  Brenden Morrow, however, was able to steal the puck and got a beautiful shorthanded goal.

In the third period, Edmonton found themselves in poor penalty trouble, and Dallas capitalized on it again.  Jere Lehtinen got his second power play goal of the night.   Just 2 minutes later, Mike Modano took a penalty for holding.  Edmonton saw this as their opportunity, and Dustin Penner got one past Turco on the power play, with assists from Sam Gagner and Ales Hemsky.   Edmonton managed to rally for another goal a little over 8 minutes later from Curtis Glencross, with an assist from Denis Grebeshov.  It looked as though they could possibly come back and tie it and force it to overtime.  With just over 2 minutes left, they pulled their goalie.  Mike Modano stole the puck and took off down the ice to get the puck in the empty net, putting the Stars up 5-2.  This game was over.

Steve Ott played really well, he got under the skin of just about every Oilers player on the ice.  Turco played a solid game, he made some amazing saves.

The three stars of the night were

  1. Jere Lehtinen
  2. Brenden Morrow
  3. Steve Ott

Stars take on the Nashville Predators tonight.

Sam Gagner! Squee! I mean, uh, Sam Gagner is shaping up to be a pretty good hockey player. The Oilers have been having trouble with penalties this season, it’s really been hurting them. Especially Steve Staios. He seems to have random mental meltdowns a la Darcy Tucker, and he takes a lot of stupid penalties and has hissy fits.

Seriously, it looks like Hagman, Eriksson and Daley are posing for prom photos in that picture. I don’t know why, but it does.
