Morrow and Ribeiro lead team past Preds

Brenden Morrow and Mike Ribeiro both had 4 points in the Stars 6-3 win over the Nashville Predators.  The Preds were without some key guys, but so were the Stars.  Nashville came in knowing they had to play a tight game to try to earn a spot in the playoffs, but it wasn’t enough.

Antti Miettinen opened the scoring 11 minutes into the first period, with a goal from Jussi Jokinen and Trevor Daley.  Nashville countered 13 minutes in with a power play goal from Ville Koistinen (assisted by Vernon Fiddler and Radek Bonk.)   Nashville had a second chance to score in the 1st, when Stéphane Robidas took a delay of game penalty just 30 seconds after Lundqvist took a hooking call, but Stars managed to show off their penalty killing skills.

The second period scoring was done by all Stars; two of them to be exact.  Loui Eriksson got his first of the night 17 minutes in, with assists from Mattias Norstrom and Brenden Morrow.  Erikssons goal was bookended by Mike Ribeiro; scoring one goal just under 6 minutes in from Brenden Morrow and Matt Niskanen and a second goal with 4 seconds left in the second.

J.P.  Dumont scored for the Preds just under 3 minutes into the third, with assists from former Star (and current Preds captain) Jason Arnott and Jerred Smithson.  Stars then scored two more goals; one from Brenden Morrow (assisted by Mike Ribeiro) and Eriksson’s second of the night assisted by Brenden Morrow and Mike Ribeiro.   The Nashville Predators ended up getting a goal in right at the buzzer, to make the final 6-3 Stars.

Stars started Mike Smith, and he made some great saves.  It’s nice to know we have a back up goalie who can really hold his own.

The three stars of the night were

  1. Mike Ribeiro
  2. Brenden Morrow
  3. Loui Eriksson

Mike Ribeiro also took the number 1 spot on NHL.com for the three stars of Saturday night.

And now some very upsetting news; Sergei Zubov is expected to be out 3-4 more weeks.  He had surgery  Sunday morning to place a screw into the fractured bone in his foot.  Oh goodness.  He should be back in time for the playoffs.

“If everything goes as planned, he should be back by the last week of March and then we’ll have that week and a week and half in April,” Stars coach Dave Tippett said of the start of the playoffs April 9. “That’s the plan.”

Things are clicking along now, aren’t they? (Except for the Zubov news. But he’ll be healthy in time for the playoffs, which is the important thing.)
