Alexei Cherepanov

Alexei Cherepanov was going to be a great star in the NHL, he had been drafted by the New York Rangers and was currently playing in the KHL.  So far in 14 games he’d had 7 goals and 12 points.

Sadly, during their game yesterday, after playing a shift he collapsed and his heart stopped beating.  It was later revealed the he suffered from chronic ischemia, when not enough blood is supplied to the heart and other organs.  No one knew about the ischemia, it wasn’t found during a test the NHL does before draft nor by the KHL.

Russian Lawmakers are saying he may have died due to neglegence on the part of paramedics.  The ambulance usually at all games had already departed and had to be called back to the rink.

It’s incredibly sad and my thoughts and prayers are with his friends, family, teammates and fans.

The Cherepanov and Bourdon accidents are tragic, for their families and the NHL. The question is whether these accidents can be prevented in the future. Maybe better testing on the NHL’s part for the Cherepanov situation and educating the players (youngsters) on dangerous activities such as motorcycle etc… Just seems like more should/can be done to prevent tragedies like these from occuring in the future…. and it is ridiculous how the Rangers are seeking another pick to replace Cherepanov. My thoughts. http://jib-sports-culture.blogspot.com/2008/11/tragedy-for-promising-rookies.html
