Goaliepalooza 2009

That is how Razor referred to this game, and that is what it was.  100%.  Both Marty Turco and Ilya Bryzgalov managed to get a shutout in the first 65 minutes of this game, forcing it into a shutout.  You know what sucks though?  Getting a shutout and still losing.  It blows, a lot.

Anyway, the entire game was very disciplined and well played from both ends.  Each team had their strengths.  At the end of 65 minutes, the Stars lead in shots 38 to 28, they also lead in faceoff wins 30 to 23.  Phoenix, ever, beat the Stars (even literally on the ice) in hits 36 to 20.  In gathering my notes, they also gave me a paper cut.  Ouch.

Anyway, it took a shootout to decide this one, 5 rounds of a shootout, due to the fantastic goalies.

  1. Brad Richards was up first, who went fast down the middle only to have Bryz stop it
  2. Joakim Lindstrom was first for the Coyotes, which Marty stopped
  3. Loui Eriksson faked before he shot, but did not fool Ilya.
  4. Peter Mueller got the first goal of the shootout
  5. Mike Ribeiro was up, and did another fancy move and scored before running over Bryz
  6. Olli Jokinen was up to finish the game, but Marty wouldn’t go down so quick.
  7. James Neal, our shining rookie, used an old Jussi trick and got it past Ilya.
  8. Steven Reinprecht got one past Marty as well, tying it up again.
  9. Mike Modano was up, but Bryz wasn’t going to let America’s Greatest Born scorer beat him
  10. Kyle Turris finished the game, getting Phoenix the 2 points in the shootout.

Not surprising, the 3 stars of the games were 2 goalies and the shootout winner, Ilya Bryzgalov, Marty Turco and Kyle Turris in order.  It really was a fantastic, well played game on both ends.
