Farewell, Matti Norstrom

June 10, 2008

After a 14-year NHL career, Mattias Norstrom has announced his retirement.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t a huge fan of his during the regular season, but by the end of the season and into post season, he really showed what he is capable of.  He is a great hockey player and one of the nicest men I’ve ever  had the opportunity to meet!

Liveblog: Stars vs. Sharks – Game 4

April 30, 2008

It’s been a while since I’ve liveblogged, figured this would be a good game to do it. I actually got home just in time, so let’s get this started shall we?

18:44: Sharks get a good little scramble in front of the net, but Turco being his awesome self sweeps it aside.

17:52: Fishsticks got a nice shot on goal, but it went just a little wide.

16:11: Michalek gets a hard shot, but Turco is awesome and stops that too. Good boy Turks. They are going on about his awesome save percentage in the playoffs.

15:55: Some NICE passing gets Lehtinen right on net, but Nabokov stops it. Fake russian has been pretty good!

15:40: HEEEE Josie Grossie got a NICE hit on Jumbo.

14:52: Hey it’s Toby! With Stu being out from that hit yesterday, Petersen was put in. He’s been out since Zubov has returned so they can dress 7 defensemen.

14:30: DON’T HIT RUSSIAN ROENACKER!

14:11: Are you serious? One little push and Setoguchi and he goes flailing on the ice. Okay, so it wasn’t one little push. But Modano is taking a penalty.

How about that Matti Norstrom?

April 30, 2008

No, seriously.  That friendly Swede is having an amazing playoff run.  Not only did he help with Morrownators OT goal in game 1, but scored it in game 3 to put the Stars up 3-0 in the series.

Last night, the Sharks came out to win, and that definitely showed in the first 2 periods.  Patrick Marleau who seemed almost invisible the first 2 games managed to score an unassisted short handed goal to put the Sharks up 1-0 in the first period.  The lead held until the 3rd period.

The Stars started both the second andthird periods on a power play.  They ended up having a 5-3 30 seconds into the 3rd period, and it was that that got the Stars rolling.  Sergei Zubov, in only his 2nd game back, got one past Nabokov to make it 1-1.  Mike Ribeiro and Brad Richards assisted on that goal, what a group.  From then on, it was a full out attack from the Stars end, controlling most of the play.  Neither team, however, was able to get the puck past either goalie, despite Hagman getting an unsuccessful penalty shot 10 minutes into the 3rd, so it was time to go to overtime for the 2nd time this series.

What is there to say, the Stars never let up.  They kept grinding and wore down what came to be a very tired Sharks team.  Then, over 4 minutes into the first OT, Ribeiro got the puck to Norstrom who shot it.  It deflected off of a Shark and went in.   Perfect.

Both goalies played extremely well and both gave their teams a chance to win, the Stars just had more want and desire in them to get what needed to be done done.  They go again tonight at 8pm, This will be interesting.

You gotta have Hart

April 29, 2008

Hee, that phrase will always make me laugh. Thanks No Lip Tipp. Anyway, the Hart trophy nominees were announced.

  • Jarome Iginla (Calgary Flames)
  • Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh Penguins)
  • Alex Ovechkin (Washington Capitals)

Surprise, surprise surprise.

In other news, former Star and one of my favorites, Jeff Halpern, has been named CAPTAIN of the Men’s National Team. Good boy Halpie!!!!!!! I might watch this year, afterall. Of course he is no captain rookie, having worn the C while on the Washington Capitals.

Also, I am quite proud of Mr Matty Norstrom. Not only did he get the game winning goal in overtime..

He was also named as the 3rd star of the night! WOOHOO. I will have my game recap up tomorrow!

Also, I finally updated the Playoff Stats, go me.

And while I support all teams in Dallas (even those that blow), I must say I am a bit happy the Mavs are out of the playoffs. The reason is purely selfish: The Mavs banners will now be taken off the AAC and replaced with the original Stars banners. Brenden Morrow will flap in the breeze again!

Oh, and they’ve also locked Otter in for 2 more years. I’m sure all of the Pacific division is throwing parties :D

Liveblog: Final game of the season: Stars vs. Sharks

April 6, 2008

Pregame

I figured with it being the last game of the season, one last regular season liveblog will be good. Okay, but why is Razor holding his mic like that? Wtf? I love them talking about the young guys, Fishsticks is so awesome. Yes oh yes he is. And what do you mean “if they get IN the series?” FISHSTICKS BETTER BE IN THE PLAYOFF SERIES RAZOR!

1st period

20:00: Of course, Marty is the getting the start. Come on Marty, let’s kick their ass.

19:32: Eriksson got a nice shot on Nabokov, which he stopped. Boo.

18:18: Winchester and Barch are playing on the same line. Lundqvist was on the starting line up, so I assume Richards and Ribeiro are both still out.

17:27: Otter is back after leaving the game Friday barfing. Ew.

16:05: Brenden, I love you. But let’s not turn the puck over to the Sharks.

15:47: Holy shit, good job Turco. He stopped 2 quick shots in a row.

15:30: Lehtinen is apparently out. But Mittens is back with Morrow, Ribeiro is still out. Modano is playing center on that line again. Jere has the Flu.

14:15: WINCHESTERRRR, awesome hit on Ozolinsh.

14:00: Someone is taking a penalty, and Barch starts talking with McLaren and Winchester comes over and he and Shelley get into it. McLaren apparently loves Barchie, seeing as he’s trying to undress him. San Jose taking a penalty! WOOT!!

That a boys..

March 30, 2008

I love that I wait until an hour before our next game to post a recap from the game yesterday. Of course, my yesterday was extremely full because I spent all of yesterday morning at the car dealership purchasing my new vehicle. (Which is totally awesome btw)

So anyway, the start of my day went well; it was up to the Stars to make it finish as it started. Thank goodness, they did not disappoint! Their last win was March 9th, and 20 days later they got their second win of the month. And it was a well deserved win. They played hard and it showed.

Not only did we win, but we won by 5 points with the final score being 7-2. Goals were by Stéphane Robidas, Brenden Morrow, Stu Barnes, Niklas Hagman, Jere Lehtinen and Loui Eriksson got 2 goals. Robi also got 2 assists, Norstrom got 2 assists, Mike Ribeiro had 3 assists and Brad Richards had 2. Mike Modano, Trevor Daley and Jere Lehtinen also got an assist in the game.

It was definitely a team effort and it paid off. Good job guys! Now let’s keep it going tonight against the Ducks.

Where art thou Maytag repair man?

March 19, 2008

Because maybe you can fix this. The Stars, who have gone 5-1 against the Ducks this series just lost to said team 2-1. They played fantastic the first 2 periods. Morrownator got a short-handed goal in the first. Granted, they did allow Bertuzzi to get a power play goal in the 2nd period, but still. The way the team was playing, it looked like they could come back from that. WHAT HAPPENED? What happened to my February Stars? Where have they gone? I am about to hire a damn search party. After going 12-2 in February, we are now 1-6 in March.

I have one solution that might help: STOP PUTTING OUR TWO WORST D-MEN ON THE ICE TOGETHER. Norstrom and Nisky do NOT make a good pair. It’s not cool. And you need to stop it now.  Also, if Morrownator could stop taking penalties it’d help, too.  Or if the refs could, you know, just overlook it all like they do with Pronger.

Maybe someone can enlighten me on what is so great about Niskanen? This will sound awful, because he is a cool kid. Really he is, but he is not some ‘fantastic’ rookie everyone makes him out to be. He’s had more ice time than Grossman and Fistric, but yet makes the most mistakes each game. Almost everytime he had the puck tonight he turned it over. I think a lot has to do with the fact that he was partnered with a player that could make a rubber chicken look like the best hockey player ever.

At least Brenden was 3rd star of the game. Though it’s not a huge plus after the month so far.

Liveblog: Stars vs. Colorado

March 8, 2008

Colorado is the 2nd team on my “I hate you” list. I’m not fond of them whatsoever. Today is the first of a home-and-home series between the two teams, and it’s sure to be two good games, well I hope so anyway.

Let’s not suck today Stars. Especially after the week I’ve had.

1st period

Just for the record, both Ralph and Razor’s suits are the color of shit. Not attractive guys. At all

20:00: They start with an odd line, Richards-Lehtinen-Ott. Okay, so it’s not exactly odd, but it’s a line I wasn’t expected to see. I guess trying to mix it up. Oh god they have Norstrom and Niskanen together.

19:15: Mo is out with Mittens and Hags. That’ll be interesting! I guess they just mixed up Richards and Mo.

18:40: You know, the only good thing about Boucher being it out is that both Fistric and Grossman get to play. Granted, I’d much rather have Boucher play because he is made of awesome, but I know they won’t sit Norstrom so our two young fantastic D-Men can play.

17:40: ahhhhh Jeff Finger!!!!! I wish I could remember why I hate you. But stay away from Brenden or I’ll come up with a new reason.

17:10: They kept Petersen up apparently, AND WINCHESTER IS PLAYING AGAINNNNNNNN. YESSSSS!!!!
