What exactly is going on with the NHL All-Star voting?

November 19, 2008

If the trend continues, it looks like the starting line up is just going to be the Red Wings vs. the Canadiens, with a Flame and Canuck thrown in for good measure.  Is something wrong with this picture?  It sure seems so.

It was highly publicized that the NHL was looking into Canadiens fans using an auto-voting program to vote for their team to be in the All-Star game.  I get that, it’s the 100 year anniversary and is being held in Montreal.  The NHL vowed to go through and delete any votes that did not appear to have been cast by an actual person.  But why does it seem the Stars took most of the hurt from this happening.

James Mirtle at From The Rink posted the tallies after the first day of voting, and here were the Stars numbers:

Brenden Morrow: 24,455
Mike Ribeiro: 24,074
Marty Turco: 19,296
Stephane Robidas: 18,855
Mike Modano: 14,543
Sergei Zubov: 9,061

Here are the tallies as of 7:30 this evening:

Stars win 3-2, head to Western Conf. Finals

May 3, 2008

….Oh wait, that’s right.  That’s what the title of this post SHOULD say, but instead it’s “Series returns to Dallas for Game 6”

If I have ever seen a game decided by calls it was this one.  I’m not complaining about the penalties, but more like the goal that wasn’t.  I will admit it, I am usually biased when it comes to anything Brenden Morrow.  But I can admit when a goal of his can be rendered no-goal, such as his 3rd ‘goal’ when he put it in with his glove when he was unable to get his stick to the puck in time.  That’s an obvious one.

The no goal for a kicking motion however?  I am livid.  Absolutely livid.  I’m not trying to join into the ‘conspiracy theorist’ group, but something wasn’t right about that.  His skate was behind him and was moving towards the goal when the puck deflected off of it to go into the net.  It was part of him stopping, he didn’t even see the puck when it hit his skate, so how did he know to start kicking it in?  He didn’t.

My absolute FAVORITE part, was them showing one of the video judges and him laughing and smiling while they called no goal.  Absolute favorite.

To mention the actual game, it was 3-2 in OT, with the Sharks Pavelski getting one past Turco just over a minute into overtime.  Dallas goals came from Jere Lehtinen and Brenden Morrow.

Steve Ott Suspended

March 11, 2008

Yep, for 3 games for his hit on Leopold Saturday.

Here is the video (it’s not the fight, but they show the actual hit)

Otter is not a dirty player, he just has a dirty mouth.  It is really unfortunate that Leopold got hurt.  I think one game would’ve been enough for a first-time offender, since it seems he briefly left his feet.  I do not, however, believe that Ott intended to injure Leopold, it’s just that Leopold bending over put Ott’s shoulder and arm right by his head.  To me (though I could be biased and I’m trying not to be now that I’m over my original anger) it doesn’t look like Otter wasn’t aiming at his head.

Oh, and San Jose is now top of the Division.

The better news is that the Tampa Bay Lightning won tonight against the New York Islanders. Halpie had 3 points (a goal and 2 assists) and Jussi had an assist. Yay boys!!
